Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We encourage regular maintenance on your heating and air conditioning equipment all the time, but this doesn’t simply mean annual tune-ups – it also involves looking at your air filters. It’s an easy way to help keep your system operating smoothly and enhance your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it by yourself! Today is the ideal time to check your filter, as winter comes to an end and summer is on the horizon. There are many benefits to getting a replacement air filter, such as:

Increasing the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to cause a system breakdown is a dirty air filter. Additional dirt that gathers on your filter can force your whole system to operate harder than it should to keep you cool. Not only will it hinder the performance of your system, but it can increase your utility bills and result in your system overheating.

Enhancing indoor air quality
The goal of an air filter is that it snatches contaminants through your air system before it enters your residence. After the filter has been in for a while, the less efficient it is in trapping things like dust and mold that can impact the health and comfort of your home, especially if someone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma. With increased temperatures around the corner, pollen and mold are especially likely to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it moving in your indoor space. A quality, clean air filter will help your family breathe easy and keep healthy during allergy season.

Inspect your system or current air filter provider for guidance on how often you should be putting in a replacement filter. For the majority of the filters through Colvin's Heating and Cooling, we recommend an annual change with the highest MERV filter that is offered.
