Why you should replace your air filter this winter

We stress routine maintenance on your heating and air conditioning equipment constantly, but this doesn’t simply mean ongoing tune-ups – it also involves assessing your air filters. It’s an easy way to help keep your system operating smoothly and improve your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it by yourself! Now is the perfect time to inspect your filter, as the cooler weather comes to an end and summer is on the horizon. There are many benefits to getting a replacement air filter, such as:

Extending the life and efficiency of your system
A definite way to instigate a system breakdown is a dirty air filter. Excess dirt that accumulates on your filter can force your whole system to work harder than it should to keep you cool. Not only will it impact the performance of your system, but it can escalate your energy costs and result in your system overheating.

Increasing indoor air quality
The purpose of an air filter is that it grabs contaminants through your air system before it flows into your house. As the filter gets older, the less efficient it is in catching things like dust and mold that can hurt the health and comfort of your home, especially if someone in your home suffers from allergies or asthma. With increased temperatures around the corner, pollen and mold are especially likely to be hanging around and you would prefer they aren’t traveling in your home. A quality, clean air filter will help you breathe easy and keep healthy throughout allergy season.

Inspect your system or chat with your local HVAC expert for guidance on how regularly you should be changing your filter. For the majority of the filters through Colvin's Heating and Cooling, we recommend an annual change with the highest MERV filter you have access to.
