The Next Generation of Cooling Refrigerants. Refrigerants are liquids stored in your air conditioner’s coils that cool and dehumidify indoor air. Without refrigerants, air conditioning would not be possible. For a long time, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will no longer be legal to produce R-22 as a result of its damage to the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now engineered to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and doesn’t contain chlorine, so it’s ozone-friendly. You can feel at ease using this refrigerant in Excelsior Springs because it’ll help make your cooling system operate efficiently, reliably and quietly, and deliver the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was built prior to 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You may want to look into upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately phased out. The old refrigerant will become scarce in the next few years, costing you more to use your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Colvin's Heating and Cooling work with R-410A, so you can be sure we have an AC or heat pump more suited to your needs. You should also avoid”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
